The Cologne Cathedral is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Cologne, making it a Roman Catholic church.
The foundation stone of Cologne Cathedral was laid on 15 August 1248. It wasn't until 1880 that the final components, namely the towers, were completed. So, one could say that the construction period lasted more than 600 years.
In 1996, Cologne Cathedral was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
